Math, Science, food, and fun were enjoyed by all who attended. Special thanks goes to Ms. Allen for her address to the many parents, students, school volunteers, WestEd, and the outstanding members of the Cost Plus Team who attended and facilitated students and families engaging with the math and science games and activities. Nightingale Charter Kickoff
On Friday March 23, 2012, Florence Nightingale Charter School held their Charter Kick-off event and Project-Based Learning Showcase. The turnout was incredible with over 400 parents, students, staff members and district personnel attending. Students were excited at the opportunity to share their first PBL with their parents and family members. The overall theme for the night was “Citizenship” with all grade levels presenting student created projects reflective of the idea of “What makes someone a good citizen”.
Since becoming one of SUSD’s dependant charter schools last year, Nightingale has adopted a holistic view of teaching and learning that centers on 21st Century outcomes with innovative support systems to help students master the multi-dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st century. Through Project Based Learning, “students develop greater understanding of a topic, deeper learning, higher level reading and increased motivation to learn.” This showcase was the first opportunity for parents and the community to see the changes that have come to Nightingale Charter. In addition, all attendees were treated to dinner, a resource fair, scavenger hunt, and raffle prizes. The evening culminated in a presentation made by Cost Plus World Market’s General Manager, Mr. Bill Kennedy. Cost Plus has adopted Nightingale School and presented them with a check for $2500.00.
This is just the beginning of great things to come! Nightingale Charter School is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year. We welcome all interested SUSD students to apply.
